Stage 01 of 07 · Patent portfolio audit

Patent Portfolio Audit for Universities

Know what you own, what is free to license, and where the value is.

Most university patent estates grew one disclosure at a time. Filings sit across the technology transfer office, research centres, affiliated hospitals and spin-outs. Some are lapsed, some are tied up in old licences, and a few may not belong to the university at all.

Portfolio Clarity turns a raw patent export or internal spreadsheet into a clean, verified register, grouped into portfolios your team can act on.

What we do

  • Inventory Gather every granted patent, application and PCT filing into one register, from Lens, your docketing system or your own spreadsheet.
  • Ownership check Confirm the owner of record and flag assignment gaps, co-owned patents and records that belong to someone else.
  • Legal status Confirm grant, family members and maintenance-fee status for the patents that matter.
  • Encumbrances Map existing licences by exclusivity, field and territory, and keep field-restricted patents in a separate, flagged tier.
  • Technology grouping Cluster patents by technology, inventor and family, and map each cluster to your research strengths.

Example engagement

Client work, anonymised

A US private research university

Challenge

The office exported about 137 US patent records and needed them organised before any licensing work could start.

What we did

We pulled the claims for every record, then grouped the estate by inventor, technology and family into 26 portfolios. The review also found records that did not belong to the university, which we moved into a separate bucket rather than letting them into the analysis.

Result

A clean register of 26 portfolios, with already-charted work clearly separated, so the next stage could screen only the portfolios still open for licensing.
