Stage 03 of 07 · Patent-product pairing

Patent-Product Pairing

Link each patent to a real product and a real buyer.

An approach that says a patent may be relevant to a company's business rarely gets a reply. One that names a product the company sells today, and shows how it relates to the claims, starts a conversation.

We compare each priority patent with commercial products in its field, rank the pairings, and turn the strongest ones into a list of companies to approach.

What we do

  • Product selection Identify live products in the relevant sectors, sold in the patent's own country.
  • Date check Confirm each product launched after the patent's priority date, so the pairing is worth pursuing.
  • Element comparison Compare the patent's key claim elements with each product's published features.
  • Pair ranking Rank pairings by strength, commercial value and enforceability.
  • Licensing targets Name the companies behind the strongest pairings, with notes on how open each is likely to be to a licence.

Example engagement

Client work, anonymised

A US public research university

Challenge

The university had a shortlist from its own records, with disclosure status, IP type and lead inventor for each, and needed to know which companies to approach.

What we did

We grouped the shortlist into portfolios by technology and inventor, then paired each patent with commercial products, recording the company, product and launch date. Ownership checks showed one patent was owned solely by another institution's research foundation, so it was removed before any charting.

Result

One workbook per portfolio and a summary report the office could use to plan outreach, with no effort spent on a patent the university could not license.
